What should me and my husband wear to the NYC Ballet?

Its a matinee (2pm), does he need to wear a tie? Should I wear a dress, or can we wear jeans? We have to go to dinner after, and then clubbing/bar hopping.

HONEY. NO. ABSO-FREAKIN-LUTELY, NO TO THE JEANS.

I DO NOT CARE IF THEY ARE TROUSER, HIGH WAISTED OR 900$. NOO! :P

haha ok sorry i had to get that out of my system.

anyways, you dont have to wear a full length couture gown, but try wearing a nice dress or a nice pair of slacks.

stay simple and DO NOT, by any means over accessorize.

like you know those girls who look like a forever 21/claire's disaster?? yeah- POLAR OPPOSITE!

youre probably living in NYC right? well when you walk down 5th, what do you see? chic women dressed in black stepping into discreet town cars. imitate them. emulate them. BE them.

the key is to be chic, simple and classy.

REMEMBER:*its always better to be over-dressed than under-dressed!* It is always easier to dress down if you find that you are over dressed.

and some final tips:

-Bring some chic sunglasses. my faves? oliver peoples.

-Bring a sweet cardigan that matches your outfit, in case it gets chilly or you need to update your look.

-Accessories? a simple black prada clutch or the Vuitton speedy.

-This is the time to break out those chloe shoes. You dont need to wear the every-day flats. Your going to be sitting the entire time! wear gorgeous shoes.

-Find child care if necessary, so you can enjoy it!

-Cell phone. off. duhh.

-Ride a taxi. no one ever rides obnoxious limos. geez.

-Haave fun!!!

no need for fancy clothes, just wear something business smart (suit with a shirt without a tie for him) and a nice dress for you. don't need to go overboard though.
probobly dress up usually ballets are fancier
Since it's a matinee you can probably wear 'business casual' although I would avoid jeans. However, how often do you and you husband have the opportunity to get dressed up an spend and evening on the town? Take advantage have him throw on his suit, put on a nice dress, go to the Ballet, have nice dinner and look good.
something casual like black and white it will make it seem like you are high in society
I second the business casual attire....ballets are usually fancy, no matter the time of the day. Evening shows mean MORE fancy, but afternoon shows still require something near church attire or business casual. No tie for him, and maybe even no nylons for you, but you'll feel prettier, and more special, and like you're doing something more out of the ordinary than going to a movie. When you dress up you feel different, and will carry yourself in a more elegant way. If you wear jeans, you may feel under-dressed, and out of place, as if you didn't know any better, and it's your first time to the ballet.

(just for a mental picture)-Plus after the ballet, sometimes people get pictures with the performers, you wouldn't want to be in jeans standing next to a dancer in a $3,000 tutu and $80 custom made pointe shoes.

Maybe just wear a cute pair of black pants for yourself, and change into a more club appropriate shirt afterwards, and husband can remove his blazer and roll up his shirt sleeves? That will be a quick change for a more relaxed evening.
I would say nothing too formal but something nice. A casual suit for him. A nice spring-ish dress for you. I hope that I helped you out. Have a wonderful time at the Ballet.
